Kraftheinz discards synthetic food dyes from US products

Kraft Heinz announced Tuesday that it will remove all FD&C artificial dyes from its US portfolio by the end of 2027 amid pressure from the Trump administration. The national food supply.
Kraft, one of North America’s largest food and drink manufacturers, said it would soon be effective as it would not launch new products in the US in artificial colors. Kraft Heinz said it is working with the brand’s licensee to encourage FD&C colors to be removed.
“The majority of our products use natural or no color. We are on a journey to reduce the use of FD&C colors for the rest of our portfolio,” said Pedro Navio, president of North American operations at Kraft Heinz in a statement.

Navio said it never included artificial dyes, noting that the company’s famous tomato ketchup comes from the red coloured tomatoes. However, the company removed artificial colors, preservatives and flavors from Kraft Mac & Cheese in 2016.

Health and Welfare Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been focusing his efforts on blocking colour since taking over earlier this year.
“For too long, some food producers have fed American oil-based chemicals without knowledge or consent,” Kennedy said in an April statement. “These toxic compounds do not provide nutritional benefits and pose realistic and measurable risks to the health and development of children.”
His comments came as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collaborated with the industry to announce plans to eliminate FD&C Green 3, FD&C Red 40, FD&C Yellow 5, FD&C Yellow No. 6, FD&C Blue No. 1, and FD&C Blue No. 2 by the end of next year.
The FDA has approved seven certified color additives for use in foods, as they are also permitted in drug and cosmetics. However, one of these, Synthetic Food Dye Red No. 3, was already banned on food and drugs earlier this year.

In January, the issue of color additives came into focus when the FDA said it was issuing an order to revoke the authorization for the use of Red No. 3 – also known as Erythrosine and gives certain foods and drinks a bright, cherry-red color – after it reviewed a petition filed that argues, under a rule called the Delaney Clause, the FDA should ban this color additive in foods and drugs on a federal level because it has been shown to cause cancer in the animal.

As part of the FDA ruling, food manufacturers had to remove FD&C Red No. 3 from their products by January 15, 2027. Manufacturers must do so by January 2028.

Kraft Heinz said that, considering the “long history of approval” by the FDA, they used artificial colors on “a small number of products.”
