Alison Arnglam, who starred as Nelly Oleson in “The Little House of Prairie,” thinks there is one episode of the series that hasn’t been made today.
In a recent episode of “Little House 50” Podcast Arngrim spoke about Pamela Bob and Little House co-star Dean Butler about the fourth season episode of the show aired in 1977, titled “Here Come The Brides.”
The episode tells the story of how Oleson is begged by Luke Sims, a town teenage boy. They eloped after a brief romance. However, after the parents found out, they were returned to unmarried peace justice.

Oresen said he was just 15 when he filmed the episode. Her character was supposed to be 13 years old.
“I was in the supermarket… (and) adolescent madness is happening,” explained Arunim. “She’s barely 13 years old. This cat plays 16, 17. He’s in his late 20s.”
Bob Marsic, who played Simms, was 22 years old.

“It’s a young girl – the kids accusing grown men they’re not featured,” Arnglim said of how the characters responded to Sims’ appearance.
“That won’t happen today, is it?” Bob asked. “It could even play or kiss grown adults. It was an innocent kiss, but it was a kiss – a minor.”
Filming was awkward from the start, Arunym recalls, saying that he hadn’t seen any love interest on screen before filming began.

“I think we were like kissing the first day or something,” she said. “Maybe the second – the second day? It was pretty fast, it was like ‘Hello, introduction, now you’re in love’. ”
Arngrim pointed out that there is no major age gap between the younger actors if similar scenes were filmed today. This includes an intimate coordinator that didn’t exist at the time.
The former Childstar explained how at one point he took his girlfriend to set while the episode was being filmed.

“It was another strange moment,” Arngrim said on the podcast. “His girlfriend showed up and it was strange. It seemed… there was this vague thing about her wanting to be there for a romantic scene.”
“Does this woman think I’m a threat?” she laughed. “Really? This 15-year-old Pimply girl? No. I’m not a threat to your relationship. I’m not stealing your man.”

“You couldn’t do that today,” the actor who played Armanzo Wilder in “The Little House,” told Fox News Digital. “There will be too many blowbacks, and it is worth noting that we didn’t get more blowbacks than we do.
“I think the audience has been watching Melissa for years and loved her incredibly,” Butler said. “They wanted to see her when she declared her love for this young man very honestly and innocently.

According to Butler, the characters in the original book series were supposed to have a 10-year age difference. He pointed out that Gilbert had “full trust” in her TV father.
“It was a very strong relationship that Melissa had in her life and that she had with Michael Landon,” Butler said. When she said, “This is the guy for you,” she was ready to pause all her anxiety and step into it. And Michael didn’t lead anyone wrong in the series.
“I’m really grateful that he was the guy he felt he could trust in this,” Butler added.

Still, both Butler and Gilbert had to overcome the fears they had when trying to bring the scene to life.
“I think a lot of young actresses could have folded under pressure,” Butler said. “Melissa had no experience. She hadn’t been on a date. She had never kissed anyone. It was not before her yet. It speaks to Melissa’s cry and courage to ask her to step into it when she had no experience. She did it.

“My job was to make her as easy as possible by being a gentleman I grew up with,” Butler shared. “Since then, there hasn’t been a casting pairing like what they’ve done with us. That casting could simply never happen today. It’s certainly not a mainstream television show.”
