In search of the spark, manager Reuben Amorim introduced Alejandro Garnacho in the break, and the Argentine influence was immediate.
United finally showed offensive intentions in the ploy that has plagued Garnacho’s pace and Leicester’s defense.
His tenacity paid off in the 68th minute when he delivered a cross from the left, leading to a lucky break for United. Rasmus Hojlund’s initial efforts were blocked, but the ball fell to replace Joshua Zirkzee.
From that moment on, United ruled Garnacho, which is at the heart of all the attacks. He wasn’t unlucky to not acquire himself, the shot was cleared from the line and later hit the side net.
Looking comfortable in the first half, Leicester found himself under increasing pressure, but he seemed to be defiant and forced an extra time.
But deep into the suspension time, United was awarded a free kick to the right flank. Fernandez delivered a beautifully floating ball into the box, where Maguire rose to the highest to nod against his previous club. The Leicester player called for offside, but the goal was standing, uniting a dramatic and controversial victory.
It was a escape for the host. The hosts were far from the best, but managed to find a way. Leicester will feel like he’s done hard with his control and brilliant defense of the big spells of the match.
With the victory, Manchester United will advance to the 16 FA Cup round, keeping silverware hopes alive.
Amorim is relieved, but he recognizes that his team’s inconsistent displays are still a major concern.
For Leicester, it’s a cruel exit, but it can be a snatching heart, especially from the first half performance.
