Middlesbrough appoints Rob Edwards as the new boss

Middlesbrough confirmed that Rob Edwards has been appointed head coach on a three-year contract.

Edwards moves to Teesside to take over Michael Carrick, who was fired after Middlesbrough failed to reach the championship playoffs last season.

The 42-year-old enjoyed an impressive rise from the Guided Forest Green Rover and Luton for the promotion, but left the club on the brink of second consecutive relegation in January.

Appointment of Boro is a privilege – Edwards

Edwards said: “It’s a real privilege to be given the opportunity to be the head coach of this great football club. It’s something I haven’t lost, how big this is, how important this is, what it means to people. There’s a great fanbase.

“This was the right thing for me and I immediately felt excited. If I came back, I would have wanted to go back to where there was a chance. There are really good opportunities here.

“We have a great owner historically who gives coaches the time, support and the tools they need to succeed. I can’t wait to get started right now.”

Edwards is famous for his physical and direct approach, and it remains to be seen whether it sat well with the loyal people along the river.

Edwards was our first choice – Scott

But Boro’s football director Kieran Scott said the former Blackpool defender is the outstanding candidate.

“Rob is someone I’ve known for a long time and I’m closely following his development as a coach,” Scott said.

“He made history with Forest Green Rovers and earned a promotion to the Premier League at Luton Town was a great achievement.

“We had an exciting pool of candidates for this role, but Rob was outstanding and felt very impressed to meet him and hear him talk about his vision for the club.

“We are excited that Rob has agreed to join us and look forward to the future.”
