Minnesota Sen. Gilbert rescue dog euthanized after a family murder

Just a few days after gunman was shot and killed Minnesota State Sen. Melissa Hortman, her husband, and her family’s rescue dog, Gilbert, had to be euthanized.
Vance Belter is said to have shot Gilbert, the family’s golden retriever, during an attack at his Brooklyn Park home.
Minnesota Rep. Erin Kogel commented on social media platform X that he was placed after the murder.

“Her children had to put him down after learning that their parents had been murdered. Gilbert had no intention of survival. Melissa loved the dog. She trained him. A support dog. He left school and she was so happy that he failed to stay! She needed him in heaven with him,” Kogel said.
Support from Paws, a local nonprofit in Eden Prairie in Minh, took him to Facebook to share photos of Gilbert and Hortman after hearing about the death of Congressman Hortman.
The group said they remember Hortman for her kindness and compassion. They said she was always trying to make the world a better place.
