Chito Martinez, the only MLB player from Belize, has passed away. Baltimore Orioles It was announced on Tuesday. He was 59 years old.

Martinez played in the Orioles majors for three years from 1991 to 1993 as an outfielder. He played in 158 career games and hit .259 with 18 home runs, 58 RBIs and 22 doubles.

“We lament the death of former Orioles outfielder Chito Martinez, the only native Belize player to play in the majors,” the Orioles said in a X post.

Chito’s son, Dalton Martinez, wrote in X that his father had passed away at Easter.

“On Easter Sunday night, my father was unexpectedly taken from this earth,” he wrote. “We desperately need help during this time. My father was one of the best men. I taught the game of baseball the right way. I taught young men how to get better. His presence in my life will never be replaced.

The cause of death is unknown.

Chito Martinez was his sixth pick in the 1984 draft Kansas City Royals From the Martin High School brothers in New Orleans.

The Royals released him in 1990 and signed with the Orioles a few days later. The Orioles released him after the 1993 season, and he later joined Minnesota Twins. However, he never appeared with the twins.
