NCAA Woman of the Year, family among those killed in a crash crash on a plane in New York


Authorities have released the identities of six people who were tragically killed New York plane crash Saturday includes a highly regarded former student-athletes.

Six victims, most of which were associated, died around 12:15pm local time on Saturday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The six boarded a plane at Westchester County Airport in White Plains earlier that morning. Shortly before the crash, the pilot said he had radioed air traffic control at Columbia County Airport, missing out on his first approach and demanding a new approach plan.

The air traffic controller prepared new coordinates and attempted to send a low-altitude alert to the pilot three times.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, and it may take up to 24 months to complete.

The aircraft, a civilian plane owned by Michael Groff, has been found to be “compression, buckling and embedded in the terrain” of a muddy field, NTSB civil servant Todd Inman said in a Sunday briefing.

“Inman also said the authorities had obtained video of the flight, which appears to indicate that the aircraft is unharmed.”

The NTSB also said the plane has a recently upgraded cockpit with new FAA certified technology, and the pilots are flying under instrument flight rules instead of visual flight rules.

James’ father, John Santoro, expressed his sadness at the tragedy, describing groffs as an “amazing family” for the Associated Press.

“The world has lost many very good people who were going to do a lot of good things for the world if they had the opportunity,” the grieving father said. “We’re all personally devastated.”
