NEA “Teachers of the Year” refers to education professions “deeply political”

“Who am I if I wasn’t teaching? But what happens when I leave? But something has changed, because my local people were concentrated while the world was spinning. Ashley Crosson saidhigh school English teacher, during the annual National Education Association (NEA) representative meeting.

“But for me, they became my solid ground, and that solid ground became a launch pad. Once you start paying attention, once you realize how deeply political our profession is,” Crosson said.

The Pennsylvania native attended her first statewide union event in January 2024, where she met NEA President Becky Pringle. In March, Croston attended. National Education Association National Leader Detroit summit.

Crosson shared that she encountered “different NEAs.”

“It is difficult to feel a sense of assurance when the best path becomes a moving target, but I am confident that we can find comfort and resilience in what we know in the unknown.

NEA with over 3 million members is the largest teacher National unions. Crosson, a teacher at Mifflin County High School in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, spoke to thousands of delegates at a 2025 representative legislative assembly in Portland, Oregon.

Teaching in a rural community, Croston explained that many things have changed since she realized how her profession became political two years ago. The teacher cited the struggles students faced during the coronavirus pandemic when internet companies refused to provide rural students with services that “value accessibility.”

“I replaced Jayden, Gavin and Ruth who need more support systems than they need a student handbook. I’m here for my sister Sydney, born in Vietnam and raised in central Pennsylvania. Her 16 years of education had no teachers who looked like her,” Crossson said.

The National Teacher of the Year was selected by an independent select committee, including the American Federation of Teachers, representing the NEA and its union counterparts.

The meeting is held annually to set the agenda for the union. Approximately 7,000 educators from across the country attended the event on Saturday. This year’s theme is tackling “an unprecedented attack on public education nationwide.” The NEA website states.

The State Schools Board of Directors said Crosson’s comments did not represent the organization’s views.

“CCSSO is a nonpartisan, national nonprofit organization that serves civil servants who serve as directors of primary and secondary education in state and territories,” a spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “In our work, we run the National Teacher of the Year program. The National Teacher of the Year is independently selected to attract the public’s attention on the importance of excellence in education and does not represent the views or opinions of the CCSSO or the members we represent.”
