Russell Defreitas, 55-year-old Holbrook resident, recently said Major drug traffickers and other charges of 91.

He was sentenced to 53 years in prison, Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. In a press release Tuesday, the office said Defreitas was involved in “a massive cocaine and fentanyl trafficking business in Suffolk County caused two fentanyl overdose deaths.”

The incident took place on May 9, 2023, with two victims (men and women) in hotel rooms booked under the name Defreitas.

“When a woman overdose in her hotel room, Defreitas instructed his peers not to call 911,” the DA’s office said in a statement. “Defreitas removed drugs and other evidence from his hotel room and went to dinner at Wendy’s nearby.

“A few hours later, Defreitas allowed one of his companions to call 911. By then, both the woman and the man had been fatally overdose in his hotel room.”

Defreitas was arrested two days later. Authorities discovered a lot of incriminating evidence after running a search warrant in his trailer and hotel room.

“During these searches, law enforcement recovered cocaine, fentanyl, two loaded firearms, cutting agents, drug packaging material, drug weight, and numerous hotel room key cards,” the statement explained.

“And also, upon his arrest, it was discovered that Defreitas had bank cards in the names of his two overdose victims.”

Defreitas was sentenced Tuesday after defending in court without a lawyer. In a statement, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said Defreitas’ ruling “emphasizes the urgent need for strong laws,” and he supported the bill called Chelsea’s laws.

“With the passing of Chelsea law in New York, prosecutors will provide additional tools to keep dealers accountable when the product causes death,” the DA said. “This defendant’s actions directly led to deaths from two overdose, but due to our current law, these preventable deaths cannot be claimed as homicide.
