North Carolina Governor Josh Stein rejected four controversial bills targeted Diversity, Equality, Inclusion (DEI) The initiative and transgender rights set political clashes with the Republican-led general assembly.

Democrat Stein accused the three DEI-focused bill of “alienating vulnerable people” and targeted Republicans who failed to pass this year’s fiscal budget.

The DEI bill must prohibit DEI training, employment practices, and staff positions in state and local governments, and ban the use of state funds for DEI programming. The law would have imposed civil penalties on workers who violated the rules. No Democrats supported the three-day bill.

“When teachers, law enforcement and state employees need pay raises and people need shorter lines in DMVs, Congress is unable to pass the budget and instead hopes to divert us by stealing the culture war that separates us further,” Stein said in a statement.

“These mean bills will alienate vulnerable people and undermine the quality of public services and public education. So I’m rejecting them. I’m ready to work with Congress when I take seriously protecting people and addressing the urgent concerns of North Carolinas.”

They also ask the state to confirm the recognition of two genders and officially attach a new transgender birth certificate to the old one if they change the gender assigned at birth.

In his veto message, Stein said he strongly supported the bill’s anti-sexual exploitation clause, but that the final action had gone too far. “My faith teaches us that regardless of our differences, we are all children of God and that it is wrong to target vulnerable people, as is the case with this bill,” he added.

The veto brings Stein’s total to 11 since taking office in January. All within the past two weeks. Stein was before North Carolina He has served in the state Senate from 2009 to 2016 and has been attorney general since 2017.

Progressive lawyers and politicians campaigned on the platform of reducing housing costs, increasing job creation, increasing access to abortion and improving education.
