NTSB issues emergency warning for Boeing 737 Max Engine after bird strike

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued an emergency safety advisory on Wednesday to change the jet engine. Boeing’s 737 Max Airplanes to prevent smoke from entering the cockpit or cabin in certain scenarios.

The warning comes after two incidents are involved Southwest Airlines An airplane equipped with a CFM International Leap-1B engine that experienced a bird attack in 2023.

The NTSB said these CFM engines have a safety feature called load reduction devices, which can inadvertently damage the engine’s oil system if activated after a bird attack. Damage can be released into the engine and smoke can form from the ventilation system and hot oil that will eventually enter the cockpit or passenger cabin.

The NTSB investigated an incident in December 2023 involving a Southwest Airlines plane that struck a bird while taking off from New Orleans. The “Acrid White Smoke” filled the cockpit and was so thick that the plane landed quickly, and the captain said it was difficult to see the instrument panel.

In both cases, the flights landed safely and no one was injured.
