a new york city A cleaner meets the shooter at a Manhattan office building attack and talks about her horrifying encounter, saying she is “very scared,” and hides in the closet for hours before police arrive.
Sevier Nerovich said gunman Shane Tamra left the elevator bank, pointed her rifle straight at her, and began running through the glass reception door on the 33rd floor of 345 Park Avenue on Monday night. New York Times.
“He started shooting around me. I raised my hand and said, ‘I’m a cleaning woman, I’m a cleaning lady!” Nerovich said in a statement released by her union, 32BJ SEIU. “But I realized – he has a machine gun. He doesn’t know who I am. He’s going to shoot no matter what.”
Nerovich, 65, ran down the hallway and locked himself in the closet.

“I’ve begun to pray,” Nerovich recalled in a statement. New York Post. “He shot the closet door, so I was very scared, but I was fine. I heard him walking down the hallway.”
Nerovich said she thought that Rudin Management’s victim Julia Heyman was supposed to be at her desk and thought, “God, help me.”
The cleaning worker also said her supervisor had started calling her and texting her to see if she was safe. She told the New York Times at one point she said, “The man is on my floor!”
“I told him I was in the closet and he told me to stay there,” Nerovich added in a statement released by her union, according to the New York Post. “I turned off the phone because I was scared of making noise. I sat in my closet for two, maybe three hours. I was praying.”
The rampage ended when Tamura turned his gun. Nerovich eventually left the building after police arrived.
