During the investigation, Ortiz and Classe were on administrative leave, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine The casino management committee has been asked to remove player props from gambling sites.
“The evidence that props are hurting Ohio’s track and field has reached critical mass,” DeWine said in a statement Thursday afternoon. “First, there was a threat to Ohio athletes. Two well-known Ohio professional athletes have now been suspended by Major League Baseball as part of a ‘sports betting investigation.’
“The harm and integrity of the game to athletes is clear, and the benefits are not worth the harm. Prop gambling experiments in this country have failed badly. We are calling on the Casino Management Committee to fix this issue and remove all prop bets from the Ohio market.”

The NBA considered banning props after Jontay Porter was banned for life for betting in his game.
MLB suspended five players for gambling in June 2024, including a lifetime ban on San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling over $150,000 in legal sportsbooks in 2022 and 2023.
Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor leaguers – San Diego pitcher Jay Groom, Arizona pitcher Andrew Saarfrank and Philadelphia infielder Jose Rodriguez have been suspended for a year.
Referee Pat Hoberg was fired by MLB in February for sharing a legal sports gambling account with a friend who had wagered on a baseball game and intentionally deleting electronic messages related to the league’s investigation.
