Oscar Duarte overwhelms Miguel Madueño

ANAHEIM, CA – Oscar Duarte did something no one had done before. Stop 26-year-old Miguel Madueño in the seventh round. As Oscar de la Jolla pointed out, WBO lightweight champion Keyshaun Davis couldn’t stop Madueño in July last year.

This is a newly revitalized Duarte, with world-renowned trainer Robert Garcia, steadily rising towards the world title. He was elevated by his performance to Honda Center fans. Duarte held a show from start to finish. His ringwalk featured Mexican singers Miguel Cornejo and Juan Frear. In the ring, he used the first round to feel his opponent.

I was sure I could withstand the punch if I felt the power of Madueño. Duarte was able to control the exchange as he was stronger than Madueño. Duarte landed 121 power punches in seven rounds, connecting to 39% of his power punches (121 of 310). Madueño had a healthy working rate, but was unable to find a target and only landed 20.7 of his total punch (Compubox).

After the match, Duarte told the media he wanted to become a world champion, possibly setting up a match against Arnold Barboza Jr. and revenge his defeat by Ryan Garcia. In the latter case, Garcia said he could not make £140, so it’s likely to happen later in the future. The match against Barboza is easy to create as they share the same promoter in Golden Boy.

Barboza has been locked out Jack Caterr by a decision that split earlier in the day and has become an essential challenger for WBO champion Teofimo Lopez. Duarte wants to face one of his division’s champions and stated that he is ready for them. He can continue this trajectory and create a resume worthy of a title shot. He matches well with WBA champion Jose Valenzuela, but they share the same trainer, Robert Garcia. Faced with something stable may not be included in the card.

Another potential option could be the WBC Championship. Alberto Puero is scheduled to face Sandor Martin on March 1st at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Duarte seems determined to include the pieces he needs to become a champion. He said he would take a few days off and then go back to the gym to train. He wants to prepare for someone who will match him like this:

Regis Progrey was his original opponent, but he couldn’t compete due to injuries he suffered in camp. Duarte seemed very prepared and he would have beaten the Pro Grey if he had faced him in the ring. Robert Garcia knows how to make the most of his fighter jets and get better. Duarte is only improved with Robert, with championship matches displayed in Horizon.
