PlayStation Classic Theme is back to PS5 with the next update
If you’re like me, then the game doesn’t feel completely right without the influential sights and sounds of the PlayStation 2 startup menu. If that’s the case for you – for the starter, you’ll probably be 30 again this year, and we’ll go through it together – but Sony has great news: PlayStation 5 This time I’m back.
Sony confirmed this news Official blog post On Wednesday, we will be laying out new features that will be released on the PS5 in the next system update. In addition to the nifty new audio options, you can deck the console UI with themes based on PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. These were first introduced as a limited time PlayStation brandLast year we celebrated our 30th anniversary and they did very well with our longtime fans.
“We’re regaining the look and feel of four console designs to customize your home screen on your PS5 due to an overwhelmingly positive response from our community!” explained the post.
Updates containing these classic UI themes will be released on Thursday, April 24th.
“For Sony, giving players the option to reskin the UI and reminding them of their big day launching their first PlayStation game is a great move,” said David Ramb, senior reporter for CNET. “It seems ridiculous to keep the theme for a limited time just to get it back right now, but I take what I can get.
Last year’s first product also included a more general 30th anniversary UI theme that won’t come back with this update, but I don’t think most people remember it.
Based on Sony’s announcement, it is unclear whether these new themes will change the appearance of the PS5 during the startup sequence or whether the changes are restricted to the sights and sounds in the main menu. Sony did not respond to CNET’s request for comment prior to its release.

Other things in the PS5 update
While the victory of these nostalgic themes is obviously something I want to focus on, the update coming on Thursday also gives the PS5 a cool new way to fine-tune the audio on the system. According to a blog post, these new features are called “Audio Focus” and can be reached by going to (Settings)> (sound)> (Volume)> (Audio Focus). If you’ve ever tweaked settings in the soundbar or used the Dialogue Enhancement feature of the Apple TV Streaming Box, these options should be familiar to you. It’s really great to see the PS5 expand the options for people like me who can have trouble interacting with movies, shows, and games.
As Sony laid out, the audio focus options are:
- Boost low pitch: Low-frequency sounds like engine roaring and rumbling sounds amplify.
- I’ll raise my voice: Amplifies voice chat, character voices, and other medium-frequency sounds.
- Boost high pitch: High-frequency sounds amplify sounds like footsteps and metal sounds.
- Enhance quiet sound: Amplifies low-capacity sound over a wide range of frequencies.
