Pockettino cancels “unrealistic” rumors that Tottenham is coming back

Mauricio Pochettino has dismissed speculation that links him to his return to Tottenham, claiming that a comeback to North London is “unrealistic” at this time.

The 53-year-old, who now serves the US national team, is linked to Spurs’ vacancy following the surprising fire of Ange Postecoglou on Friday.

Despite delivering the club’s first trophy in 17 years with a Europa League victory, Postcoglo was released from his duties.

After spending five years at Tottenham before being fired in November 2019, Pockettino was one of the names being promoted for the job.

However, after Connecticut’s 2-1 defeat to Turkey, he made it clear that he has no plans to return to the Spurs for now.

“It’s not realistic today,” Pockettino said. “Look where I am. Look where we (the staff in his back room) are. The answer is very clear.

“Since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the (rude) list.

“I’ve seen rumours. We’re the 100 coaches on the list, so don’t worry about that.

“If something happens (in the future), you will certainly see, but I am so happy in this moment that I can’t speak about this type of thing.”

Argentina took over the US men’s national team in October 2024, overseeing nine games so far, with five wins and four losses. The loss to Türkiye marked the team’s third consecutive loss.

Pochettino is currently focusing on preparing the US team for the 2026 World Cup, co-hosting with Mexico and Canada.

During his previous stint at Tottenham, Pockettino led the club to the 2019 Champions League final and finished second in the Premier League in 2016-17.
