Portuguese Football Federation President pays tribute to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva
Pedro Proca, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, paid tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who were killed overnight in a Spanish road traffic accident.
The car, including Jota and Silva, came down from the A-52 highway in Zamora. The pair was declared dead despite emergency crew members present at the scene.
Jota, 28, won the Premier League title last season, with 26-year-old Silva playing in Penafiel’s second division and being a key member of the Liverpool team.

Lost two champions at Diogo Jota and Andre Silva – Proenca
Proca said: “The Portuguese Football Federation and Portuguese football have been completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva in Spain this morning.
“Over the incredible player with nearly 50 international appearances on the national team, Diogojota was an extraordinary figure who was respected by all his colleagues and enemies with contagious joys and references (points) in the community itself.
“On behalf of me and on behalf of the Portuguese football federation, I am expressing my deepest sadness to the clubs they played, at the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Silva, and at the clubs of Liverpool FC and FC Peniel, respectively.
“We lost two champions. The loss of Diogo and Andre Silva represents the irreparable loss of Portuguese football and we do everything each day to honor their legacy.”
The Portuguese Football Federation has asked UEFA for a minute of silence before tonight’s women’s Euro 2025 clash with Spain.
