The origins of the president’s fitness test date back to the 1950s under the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration. Eisenhower founded the Presidential Council on Youth Fitness in 1956, fearing that Americans would be less physically fit than Europeans.

“The physical vitality of our citizens is one of America’s most valuable resources. Wasting and neglecting this resource will destroy many of our ability to deal with the great and important challenges that people face, even if they allow it to be softened.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration officially enacted the Physical Fitness Awards program. The children were tested and had to perform sit-in, pull-ups or push-ups and sit-and-reach tests. The program accepts people above the 85th percentile.

After Johnson tinkered with the test, he added a mile run and a shuttle run over the years as president.

Thursday, Trump ordered The Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition has been tapped to lead the council, implementing ways to alleviate the obesity crisis for children in the US.

The executive order said the council should recommend:

  • (i) Strategies to reestablish a Presidential Fitness Test with appropriate improvements as the main evaluation tool for the Presidential Fitness Awards.
  • (ii) the president’s challenges to reward physical education excellence and strategies for the development and promotion of school-based programs.
  • (iii) Actions to expand opportunities at the global, national, state and local levels for participation in sports and physical fitness.
  • (iv) Bold and innovative fitness goals for American youth, aimed at fostering a new generation of healthy and active citizens.
  • (v) Campaigns and events that enhance American sports, military preparation and health traditions.
  • (vi) Opportunities at global, national, state and local levels to expand participation in sports and emphasize the importance of active lifestyles and excellent nutrition. It should include partnerships with professional athletes, sports organizations, player associations, influential figures, nonprofits and community groups. and
  • (vii) Strategies to address the growing national security threat posed by increased child obesity, chronic disease, and sedentary lifestyles that threaten the future preparation of the US workforce and military.

The executive order directs councils to create “a school-based program that rewards physical education excellence and develops standards for the President’s fitness award.”

“It’s a great tradition and we’re bringing it back,” Trump said.

Deccanbo is the chairman of the council. Trump said San Francisco 49ers defensive side Nick Bosa and the Philadelphia Eagles will also be on the council for Saquon Berkley and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Trump was made by executive order in July 2025.

“We have the opportunity to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, and we can literally change the fabrics of children’s lives,” Deccanbeau said. “Our first initiative is to regain and rekindle the president’s fitness tests and also reestablish some key guidelines on community building.”
