“Prophetic” letters from the fateful Titanic Journey sell large amounts of sales at auction


“Prophetic” letter written in The unlucky RMS Titanic Ocean Liners are auctioned for spectacular prices in the UK.

The letter was sold on April 26 by Wiltshire-based Henry Aldridge & Son Limited. Written by Archibald Gracie IV on April 10, 1912.

Gracie wrote a note on April 10th. The ship has left Southampton, England. The letter was consumed in London two days later on April 12th.

“It’s a great ship, but I will wait for the end of my journey before I can give her any judgment,” Gracie wrote persuasively in the letter.

“The ocean is like an old friend, and although she doesn’t have the elaborate style and diverse entertainment of this big ship, she still misses me the seaworthy quality and the yacht-like appearance,” he added.

As Henry Aldridge & Son Ltd pointed out, Gracie woke up suddenly by midnight on April 14th, with the Titanic hitting an iceberg.

“He later wrote that more than half of the men who originally reached the lifeboat had died of fatigue or cold, and that they silently slid out of the keel in the middle of the night.” The auction house said.

“When Dawn broke, Col Gracie returned to New York City on the rescue ship Cartia, where he began writing about what he had experienced.”

Gracie survived the wreck, but his health was severely affected by the disaster.

He suffered from hypothermia and various physical injuries on the day of his sinking.

In December 1912 he fell into a coma before dying of complications from diabetes.

Originally projected to be worth $80,000, the 103-year-old paper sold for an eye-opening £300,000, or $399,000.

Auctioner Andrew Aldridge called the letter “one of the best of that type.”

“It is not only written by one of the Titanic’s most important first class passengers, but (but) the letter itself contains the most prophetic lines. “It’s a great ship, but I’m waiting for the end of my journey before I can give her a judgement,” Aldridge said.

“Five days later, the Titanic was at the bottom of the North Atlantic.”

At the same auction, the Tiffany and Company watches given to Titanic rescuers were less than $2 million, more than ten times the original guided price.
