Report: Colbert’s Late Show Cancellation Promoted by Finance, not Politics

Stephen Colbert The manager knew that “Late Show” would be cancelled on CBS more than two weeks before the client did, and according to a new report, the decision to cancel the show was “truly driven by finances.”

Many supporters have speculated that the late-night show has been cancelled over Colbert’s liberal politics, but sources say Leslie Goldberg of Ankler that the decision was financially motivated.

Colbert said last week that Paramount’s decision to settle the election interference lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump for $16 million is part of Paramount’s “big fat bribes” to secure Trump’s administration’s approval for the merger with Skydance Media.

A Goldberg source told her Colbert’s manager received a call from a CBS executive informing him of the impending budget cuts to “The Late Show.” Ankler’s story also stated that five staff members were fired a year ago as additional “nips and tucks” were established to cut the show’s budget.

According to the same source, Colbert was also involved in efforts to cut the show’s budget, which helped devise cost-cutting measures to keep the show on track.

According to Goldberg, on June 27, just days before Paramount announced its settlement with Trump, manager James Dixon received a call from a CBS executive informing him that the network was away from Colbert and “Late Show.”

More than two weeks later, Dixon notified Colbert of CBS’s decision after taping the show on July 16th. The next day, the late-night host announced the upcoming cancellation of his show to his viewers.
