Riley Gaines: Congress should take the final step to abolish the Education Department after Trump’s victory

Earlier this month, supreme court His administration gave a green light to cut almost a third of the Department of Education’s workforce. It’s a major (and long postponed) step towards handing over decades of federal overreach, which has been stripped of their parents and communities.

What happened here: The court unblocked the lower court over Trump’s executive order, directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to close the department and return management of education to the state. The essential services remain the same. But the bureaucracy has grown bloated? It is in the chopping block.

And that should be the case. For years, the Ministry of Education has functioned like a control center, not like a support system. The main tasks, which have around 4,000 employees, include writing regulations, student loan management and grant supervision. Even the PR office has 89 staff members, with taxpayers over $10 million a year. A simple number of crunches shows a rather attractive salary for less attractive jobs. That money doesn’t raise your reading scores or teach your children about the constitution. That’s certainly true.

Therefore, this reorganization is important. Student loan management is handed over to Ministry of Financewhere it belongs. The simplified repayment and collection system is already in operation. Meanwhile, other functions of the DOE are reassigned to smaller, more efficient institutions. the goal? Streamline the system and return decision-making power to where it belongs: with parents and local governments. The Ministry of Education will be completely abolished.

But this is more than just a bureaucracy. It’s about value.

For years, DC officials have decided what their children have learned, the values they are teaching, and who are allowed to speak in the classroom. That chapter is closed. It’s time to restore education to people who actually impact them, including families, teachers, and local leaders.

For years, DOE has promoted radical agendas in schools around the country. In 2016, he sent a “dear colleague” letter to the school district, threatening to withdraw funds unless the boys were allowed to enter the girls’ locker rooms, bathrooms and sports teams. This is not about safety or fairness. It was to force schools to comply with social ideology that most parents never agreed to.

In 2011, DOE rewrites the Title IX rules to lower due process standards for campus sexual harassment cases, leading to litigation and unfair expulsion. In 2014, we worked with the DOJ to pressure schools to implement racial discipline assignments, regardless of whether actual discrimination existed or not. Teachers were forced to ignore destructive behavior in order to avoid inducing federal investigations. And under Biden, that got worse. The DOE expanded Title IX to include “gender identity,” attempting to ignore “gender,” pressured schools to rewrite housing, sports and facilities policies, and courts stepped in and said well.

These decisions were not made by Congress. They are obligations from unvoted bureaucrats, and are well known as people you do not vote and are not accountable. That’s not how the Constitutional Republic works.

Now, thanks to the Supreme Court, the doors are open to real reform. Congress has the power to finish work and eliminate DOE forever. These layoffs are just the first move to dismantle departments that have long prioritized politics over education.

Local control means more freedom, better accountability and real opportunity for students to succeed. It means pulling education From the Washington grip, it returns it to those who know the kids best.
