Ring Magazine’s controversial lightweight ranking analysis: Why Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson don’t deserve the top spot

The rings appeared today in a new lightweight ranking. Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson are #1 and #2. The rankings make little sense based on recent performances in these fighter jets and many others, many others. These two do not belong to the top two spots in the ring rankings.

Gervonta Davis: Demotion to #5

Tanks (30-0, 28 Kos) have not beaten quality fighters for many years and are out of a controversial draw against the super featherweight Lamon Troches. So Davis loses the stripe and needs to be demoted to #5. Even that ranking is too high considering how Gervonta has rocked top-level opposition since he won the WBA lightweight belt.

Shakur (23-0, 11 Kos) has not belonged near the #2 spot on the basis of mediocre opposition since moving to light weight. One decent opponent, Stephenson was Edwin de los Santos, who fought at 135, and he was awful. He has not fought a living body since. Therefore, Shakur needs to be downgraded to #9.
