De Niro usually switches between the role of a tough guy and the role of a parody being a tough guy. As a widow looking for both connection and purpose, Ben’s desire to help Jules is genuine, and as she overcomes her own preconceived notions about him, mutual empathy for each other becomes the basis of deeper friendship. This film contains all the features of Nancy Myers’ film: a new romance, a gorgeous kitchen – women know what people want. Jules has a very shiny Brooklyn home, and Ben develops a romance with a massage therapist (played by Renee Russo), but the film is clearly a workplace comedy, not a rom-com. But further internships are, it’s a truly pleasant movie and an antidote to getting into a bad mood. The opposite extreme of poop cruise. (Listen, I’m not knocking on it, I’ve seen a poop cruise completely. With that title, why can’t you do it?)

Since his internship, De Niro has been working relentlessly, playing criminals again, mainly in films like Killer of the Flower Moon, The Irishman, and Altonites. Maybe the popularity of an intern on Netflix will find him thirsty to see more of that big software we know we’re buried beneath that difficult look.
