Running not allowed: Stephenson faces Zepeda’s attack under the careful eyes of a New York fan
Eddie Hearn confirmed today that July 12th is the date to defend the WBC lightweight title against William Zepeda on the New York ring card. Khan says Shakur (23-0, 11 Kos) met with Turki Aralsif in the US this week “It all solved.”
Eddie says he will meet with Turki this week to discuss the Battle of Shakur Zepeda on July 12th. This is the match Stevenson has recently requested to generate interest from fans for a unified clash between him and WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis.
New York’s patience has been tested
The battle with Zepeda (33-0, 27 Kos) was able to backfire at Stevenson as he was forced to fight for the first time in his eight-year career. Zepeda cuts the ring well to Shakur using the usual 3-foot step back style. If he chooses to run from Zepeda, he will be booed from the New York venue on July 12th.
New Yorkers are not tolerant of runners. Native people in Newark are patient in seeing fighters that aren’t involved like Shakur, but fans in New York insist on seeing their actions and getting the value of their money. They let him know what he thinks about his hit-and-not-hit primitive style.
So, if Stephenson stays on the move for the 12th round, rather than standing up and fighting as Tevin Farmer did against Zepeda, he will be booed loudly. Turki was able to live to use him for this battle and regret it. Because it’s a poor matchup of style for a fragile, defensive, unengaged Stevenson. He is suitable for fighting light batters like Josh Padley and Artem Hartignan.
“July 12th (in the case of Stevenson vs Zepeda). They were going to do a show on Monday night. I believe it,” promoter Eddie Hearn said. Stepping stone Regarding Shakur Stevenson’s agreed date to defend the WBC lightweight title against William Zepeda.
Jersey News Blues
Hahn didn’t say whether Shakur-Zepeda will be the undercard fight for the ring card on July 12th or headliner. Zepeda fans are on the west coast of the Los Angeles area rather than on New York, so putting it as a main event is dangerous. Stevenson is from New Jersey and it’s unclear whether his fans are willing to deal with the headaches involved in commuting to New York.
“I know that his Excellency (Turki Aralsif) met Shakur Stephenson in America this week,” Hahn said. “They solved everything. That’s great news. It’s a great fight, Shakur vs Zepeda. We look forward to it. We know that July 12th will always be the proposed ring card in New York.
I will meet with His Excellency on Tuesday to discuss 5v5 and all sorts. I also look forward to welcoming him in town. When you see him, that’s when magic happens. So I look forward to catching up with everyone this week,” Hearn said.
