Ryan Garcia’s quest for gold: fight against WBA ‘regular’ welterweight title Rolando Romero offers a chance to silence critics

The WBA today announced that it has approved the WBA’s “regular” welterweight title for Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero Fight on May 2 at Times Square in New York City on May 2.

Line belt

It’s not a clash between Ryan and Devin Haney in October, but when they meet, the battle of Garcia Romero takes on more crisis. Capturing the WBA title will bring the title to a crisis, and the rematch against Haney will be bigger.

Rolly and Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOS) ranked second and #3 in the WBA rankings on Welterweight, respectively. So it makes sense for the world’s boxing associations to have a “regular” title for the fight next month dazn ppv.

Ryan has often been criticized for not winning a world title in his nine-year professional career. If he catches the WBA’s “normal” welterweight belt, he can shut down that criticism forever. It validates his career and gives him a lack of qualifications in the eyes of hardcore boxing fans who pay attention to such details.

Garcia’s downside is that if he wins the WBA “regular” title against Rolly, he must face the winner of the battle between WBA Super World champions Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Shakhram Giyasov. Fighting against any of them would be tough for Ryan.

Ennis is getting higher

Newly crowned WBA champion Ennis has been promoted to WBA Super Champion at 147 today by the World Boxing Association. Boots (35-0, 30 Kos) must defend the title against the WBA’s forced Giyasov within 120 days of winning the title from Eimantas Stanionis on April 12th.

“Ennis is currently required to defend his super championship against Shafram Zyasov – the official mandatory challenger of the division.” WBA Website. “For each WBA rule, Ennis must face Zyasov within 120 days of his victory over Stanionis on April 12th. The winner of Ennis vs Zyasov must face Garcia vs Romero.”
