Lynn Stewart’s death ended a long, private battle with cancer that began with her diagnosis in 2013. The illness led to the decision in March 2024 to dedicated his wife and family as director of Cricket in Surrey.
In a heartfelt statement from the time, Alec said, “I want to give her and my family more time than this job allows.” This decision reflects his unwavering commitment to his family despite Sally leading a highly successful stint. During his tenure, the club flourished. He won four county championship titles, including three consecutive dominant runs from 2022 to 2024.

On Monday at Kia Oval, the mood was gloomy as the cricket community paused for reflection. The flag above the pavilion, a member of Mickey Stewart, was named in honor of the legend of another club, Alec’s father, but dropped to the half-mast, and players observed a moment of silence before reopening.

The whole Surrey family stands with Alec and his children in grief.” The deep connections with the Stewart family’s club made particularly meaningful to players, staff and fans.

Lynn’s illness has been mostly private for many years, with Alec only speaking publicly in the context of his resignation. Married for decades, the couple survived by two children, Andrew and Emily.
