San Diego’s Jewish Family Services, which has run local immigration shelters for more than six years, has announced that it will close its facilities and fire 115 employees due to “federal funding and policy changes.”
“The Jewish Family Services in San Diego (JFS) are working to meet the evolving needs of our communities in response to recent anticipated federal policy changes,” the organization previously said.
The non-governmental organization (NGO) said it has not received new asylum seeking families or individuals since the CBP One phone app went down on January 20th.

“Because immigrants no longer have the CBP One application, the San Diego Rapid Response Network (SDRRN) immigration shelter service, operated by JFS, will provide new asylum seekers and individuals who have been released from short-term federal custody. “These changes in federal funding and policies will cause SDRRN immigration shelter services to be suspended until they have a better understanding of the needs of our future communities,” the statement continued.

The organization added that it is “focusing immigrant efforts on providing pro bono legal services and community support resources.”
“We are preparing for these changes in federal government policy and enforcement,” said CEO Michael Hopkins. “While no longer there are individuals and families seeking asylum released from short-term federal immigration custody to our shelter services, the growing needs for immigration legal support and other social services support have been a cause for the weak Sandigan. We are looking at support. We are continuing to work together. We will explore new ways to provide support together with our community partners.”

The organization received $22,077,365 Taxpayer-funded FEMA money Despite claiming they had not received funds in 2024, according to Grant Records, the FEMA website.
