“This is perfect for Benfica,” Townsend suggested. “Now they don’t have to chase. They can sit in two banks or four or five (defense and midfield) and invite Bayerns to play and play around.

“It would be very difficult for (Bayern) to break it down. The switch of play is the way to do it from left to left before the low block crosses.

Schjerdulp’s first goal in the final was the ninth in Benfica’s group stage, with the second Bayern recognizing in the US after two opening victories.

“Benfica is very well protected,” Townsend said. “(Leroy) Thane can’t take up any space. We have a long way to go and we have to remember that the attacking talent Vincent Company got on a large local bench.

“If Bayern can maintain ownership, it can tire Benfica and bring those players in the last 20-30 minutes, it could spell out the trouble.”

In the group’s simultaneous match-day three games, 20-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Garrow took the lead against Oakland in Nashville, losing 10-0 to Bayern and 6-0 to Benfica.

If these results remain the same, the Brazilian club will finish the competition in third place, two points behind Bayern.
