One of those who want to impress Simeone is Obed Vargas of Sounders, who raised Atletico fans after trying to make it in the struggle for supremacy with Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid and Barcelona, in the relative football backwaters of Alaska.
He told the club’s website: And I have always had a mentality of the underdog. There we were trying to show these guys that we weren’t that bad. And I wanted to show these guys that I was better than them.
“Atletico Madrid, they’re always underdogs. And when I lived in Alaska, I started watching them, especially in the 2014 Champions League final. And I think that correlates with my own story.”
The 19-year-old midfielder is excited to pit his wisdom on World Cup winners Rodrigo de Paul, Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann, but he insists on what kind of favor they don’t give.
He added: “It means everything. I don’t know which lineup they’re going to put out or what players will play, but seeing them play against them and jerseys, crests, and against them gives me a special motivation to give it all.
“I can say one thing to you. I won’t be a fan whenever we play them. I’m going to do everything I can to beat them.
“I think the advantage we have is that we play from home, we play in Seattle and we play in the stadium, and we think we need to use that to fuel us.
“It’s clear that there are different levels of the game, but we need to take this as an opportunity to prove people wrong, compete and prove themselves more to everyone else.”

The Lenglet is suspended, but Griezmann can rest after seeing some kind of outside on Sunday. Jose Maria Guimenez is likely to see Alexander Sorlos form the front 2 with Alvarez and come in the back 4.
