The founder has spent a decade building an almost profitable multi-million dollar spice company. She doesn’t want your venture capital dollars yet – at least not so for now

Here in the Arkansas summer, I just bought a new grill and put diaspora spices in every piece of meat and vegetables I can get. Diaspora Baiajiri, Jodhanacmin and Penimiris cinnamon became the staples of my spice drawer. My boyfriend requested that I bring a black pepper (yes, black pepper!) to his house when we cook together.

Why are these spices so much more vibrant than I’ve tasted before? How did Kadri build the millions of businesses that will acquire them from farmers in South Asia to the hands of people like me? This is something I had to know and yesterday, Kadri thankfully gave me some answers.

Most of the spices grown all over the world are indigenous in South Asia. Seeds can be extracted and transported elsewhere – and because Europeans take over the trade in spices, different soils, temperatures and weather dramatically change the flavor. If you want a warm, rustic, slightly bitter turmeric flavor of turmeric, you need to get it from India. Nutmeg, grown in India, is fruity, floral and almost light. In Indonesia it’s more intense and has almost a tobacco flavour, Kadri tells me.

The way you grow and grow spices is important for flavors that become a spice drawer. It all starts with the farms, and of course the farmers. Kadri has built her business around it. How much is the farmer needed to grow things in the absolute best way, and how much money will she accept to ensure that such a way of ensuring how much money she accepts from investors.
