Hormel Foods has appointed former CEO and board member Jeffrey Ettinger as interim CEO of the US group. He said it would take more than a year for the role to be permanently fulfilled.

Jim Sney, CEO and president of Skippy’s Peanut Butter Maker, announced his retirement in January after eight years at the helm.

In a statement yesterday (June 23), Hormel said Ettinger will retain the role of interim CEO in October next year.

“The Hormel Foods CEO Search Committee will be dissolved and the board plans to establish a permanent CEO in October 2026,” Hormel said.

The company also announced that John Gingo will be promoted to the role of president. Ghingo is the executive vice president of Hormel’s retail business unit, which houses the company’s consumer brands. He has been in this role since 2024 after four years leading Homer’s supplemental Applegate Farms.

Ettinger resigned from his position as CEO in 2016 and served as Hormel’s board president.

“During his tenure, Ettinger has gained a reputation for promoting performance and outcomes. His deep knowledge of the company and its culture and experience with external stakeholders in the company make him a strong partner for Gingo,” Homer said yesterday.

Last month, spam makers reported a six-month decline in profits, as a result of a decline in sales growth.

Operating profit for the six months ended April 27th fell 11% to $477 million, then down 9% on an adjusted basis to $519 million.

Net income was $350.3 million, with a response period of $407.9 million for the previous year.

Net sales increased 0.1% to $5.899 billion. Based on organic, net sales increased by 1%. In the second quarter, sales from Homer’s retail division remained flat, down 7% amid “decreasing product shipments and contract manufacturing.”
