The role of state accountants in the $1.8 billion accounting error is likely to fall on his job.
Republican South Carolina TreasurerCurtis LoftisIt seems likely that he will be in office for at least a year.
Republican-controlled homes have been decided not to be picked upresolutionFor his role in the $18 billion account featured in the state book, he passed the Senate to drive Loftis out of his office, but there was little real money for it.
The Senate sent a resolution on April 21 to remove Loftis into the home. House Speaker Murrell Smith said there was no time to cover it before the session ends on May 8th.
“We’re focused on passing the law right now. After the session, we’ll go on our path with the treasurer and then we’ll make the decision,” Smith said.South Carolina Public Radio.
With this decision, Loftis was opened in 2026 to begin its fifth term. One of his arguments as he took office was that it was not fair to overturn the election outcome.
“We are grateful for the House leader’s decision to choose people’s business over political theatres today, and we are sure that South Carolinians are top priority and appreciate that the political game isn’t.
The Senate voted 33-8 to remove Loftis after an extraordinary hearing in which 23 Republicans voted for Jesus. It was the culmination of more than two years of research by the senator, and it began when state accountants were exaggerating and exaggerating money that they had unintentionally exaggerated $3.5 billion to the university.
The result was an account error that began 10 years ago when states had been changing from one accounting system to another. If accountants were unable to balance two book entries when they moved thousands of accounts with different definitions, they continued to add to special accounts each year until they grewUp to $1.8 billion.
A forensic accountant who was paid a multimillion dollar fee has finally revealed that he had almost all the money. It’s not real cashBut it’s just accumulation of errors.
Loftis called for a Senate investigationWitch hunting. He said repeatedlyThere was no moneyAlso, the error was not made in his office, but others testify differently. The treasurer said continuing to focus on mistakes would threaten the state’s strong credit rating.
Just because eight Republican senators voted against the resolution doesn’t mean they support Loftis. Senator Shane Massey said he simply thought his fellow senators hadn’t made a strong enough case to get him to take office.
“I vote for the monkey through Curtis Loftis. He has no business to be a treasurer and my hope is that Republicans have a good candidate to oppose him,” Massey said.
As this is the first year of a two-year session, the resolution dumping Loftis, currently on the House Committee, will live on when lawmakers return to Colombia in 2026.
The office application will begin in March next year with the Republican primary elections for accountants, governors and other statewide offices that occurred in June.
