There are no Australian surfers living on island miles from the coast after search

The surfer, who went missing after paddling at the ocean on Wednesday afternoon, was on an island about eight miles away from where his bike and clothes were found at the beach access point the following day. New South Wales, Australia.

New South Wales Police The 19-year-old man, later identified as surfer Darcy Diffholtz in a news release Thursday morning, was found after being cleaned the day before and went missing.

Police said Diffholtz left the house on a Wool on a bike towards Wool Beach around 2:30pm on Wednesday.

After not returning home, the family involved contacted police and land and sea searches began around Uri Beach.

The next morning, Diffholz was safely located on a small island called the North Solitary about eight miles southeast of Uri Beach.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that Darcy’s father, Terry Diffholtz, could not believe that news of Darcy had been found around 9am Thursday.

“That’s a bit surreal. I was thinking about the absolute worst,” Terry Diffholtz told the station. “I didn’t give up hope, but hey, I was nearby.”

Earlier in the day, the teenagers saw bikes around town fishing on the Wooli breakwall.

Family members began to worry Wednesday night after Darcy’s clothes and bikes were found at Wooli’s beach access point just east of Grafton.

Family member Melissa Smith told the station it was likely that Darcy had gone too far on his surfboard. We were unable to return to the coast.

“He’s a survivor and a strong boy. I think he’d have known it was a safe place,” she said.

ABC reported that his smartwatch and mobile phone remained at home in Wooli, but the family believes Darcy has a Malibu surfboard.

The search effort continued until around 1am on Thursday, starting at the first light.

The Thursday morning effort included six civilian ships and a Marine rescue squad, but what was partly bewildered was how mild the sea conditions were, with a small amount of wind and swelling.

“And I think he fell into (a) current driving and drifted south as he was (and was) current in it and drifted south,” Marine Rescue Skipper Matthew McLennan told ABC.

Later that morning, one of the search crews spotted Darcy and reported that he had not been injured, but that he was cold and suffering from the revelation.

After returning to the coast, Darcy was taken to a nearby hospital.

A spokesperson for the local health district in northern New South Wales said in a statement obtained by the station that Darcy is in stable condition and “well and supported by his family.”
