“These moments can change a lot.”

Reuben Amorim believes Manchester United’s astounding comeback against Lyon reaching the Europa League semi-finals could be a spark that will rekindle the fate of the Red Devils under the Portuguese coach.

United scored three goals in the extra time of the final seven minutes in an astonishing contest at Old Trafford, moving on to the final four, meeting Athletic Bilbao with a 7-6 total.

The Amorim team endured the heated time of the season, but it all seemed forgotten when Harry Maguire found the net in the 121st minute of the match to give United a 5-4 victory, leading the home crowd to joy.

The hosts were competing for a comfortable 2-0 at halftime through Manuel Ugarte and Dio Godarotto, but Lyon fought back with a second-half goal from Corentintrisso and Nicolas’ Tagliafico.

Torisso was then sent off shortly before the end of normal time, but despite being a player’s down, visitors shocked the hosts with extra time with goals from Rayancherki and Alexandre Lacazette.

United then staged a brave comeback courtesy of Bruno Fernandez and Cobby Mineau before Maguire’s header caused a scene of joy in the stands.

It ended what was a fascinating contest at Old Trafford. And Amorim quickly cited another memorable night in the chronicle of United’s history.

“I was watching the ’99 documentary again for inspiration for these moments. It was a great night,” said the United boss.

“The team was tired and I felt that during the game. I think it ended up, but here (Old Trafford) never finishes.

“I feel that everything is possible here. You feel the environment.”

Amorim admitted that playing both the Premier League and European games has hit the physicality of his team.

And while United’s manager also sought improvements from his side, he said that morale-boosting victory could result in a wide reach, but he emphasized that supporters should accept that he prioritizes the Europa League.

“There’s a lot to improve, but the characters were there,” Amorim said.

“The reflection of the coach is the league. You can be good in the European game, but as a team, your reflection is the league and we are performing.

“But you have to look at the context. You can see that our team doesn’t have many traits. When we play against European teams, we can feel we can handle it more (physical).

“This is the type of moment that can change a lot. Sometimes you just look at the tactical aspect, you just look at the physical aspect, but this type of moment can change a lot in the player’s mind.

“We really need to focus on the Europa League and take risks from time to time with the kids in the Premier League. Fans have to understand that.”
