This AI startup offers employees the benefits of rent scholarships
Earlier this week I interviewed one of the most fussy founders I’ve talked to for a long time.
Sebastian Jimenez is CEO and co-founder Lilaa software company that provides transcription solutions to sales and service teams. He doesn’t believe in work-life balance and expects around 80 employees to spend at least 70 hours per 70 hours a week in the office. That’s a big question, but the company is sweetening its deals by offering competitive compensation and niche benefits.
In addition to traditional benefits such as healthcare, the company spends gym memberships, covering at least two meals a day, and paying for Uber if employees are late. However, there is one advantage that stands out, especially from the rest. If an employee chooses to live within 5-10 minutes of the office, they will earn $1,500 a month for rent.
That’s certainly an attractive suggestion given the high rent costs in New York City. But Jimenez says that’s not the point. The real purpose is to bring employees into the office for as much time as possible as humanly possible. So far, around 12 workers have taken RILLA into rent offers.
“If you live 30 minutes away from your office, that’s an hour a day where you can work,” says Jimenez, who lives within a walk to the office.
Such a live-two-working spirit is not for everyone. Rilla is also very clear about what future employees are expected of her. But it is an example of a company with a specific worldview that generated profits to reflect that.
“This is by no means a way to run every startup,” says Jimenez. “This is how it works for us.”
