“Thursday Murder Club,” “My Oxford Year,” and a new Netflix movie you shouldn’t miss in August
When summer dog day enters Netflix’s The August Slate of the film gives us what we look forward to. This month, the platform has dropped dozens of new films, including great originals like Romance My Oxford Year starring Sofia Carson and Romance My Oxford Year starring Thursday’s Murder Club.
The streamer also premiered several exciting new documentaries this month, including the truth about Jussy Smollett. The actor talks about the attacks he has been accused of staging and reporting as a hate crime, and another compelling reality story that was stolen: The Robbery of the Century, the theft of over $100 million Jewels in 2003.
These originals are home to a bunch of library titles like Fast and the Furious, The Rush Hour Trilogy, and Despicable Me 1 and 2, and are one of the best new titles to appear on Netflix this August.

Sofia Carson and Corey Milkleast were stars in my Oxford year, and a new Netflix romance based on the novel by Julia Whelan. Carson stars as Anna, an ambitious American student who is enrolled in the one-year poetry program at Oxford University. Anna has made a tough plan for herself, starting with her research in Oxford, but when she meets a charming man named Jamie (Myl Chreest), it all goes off track. The film arrives on August 1st.
If you’re looking for a thrilling and calm mystery, the 2024 Filipino Horror Scarecrow (also known as Espantaho) offers. After the death of a man named Pabling, his daughter Monet (Judy Ann Santos) takes part in a nine-day ritual that mourns the dead, known as Pasiyam. For these nine days, Monet and her mother Rosa have a brush of supernatural beings that bothers them as they grieve. The movie arrives on Netflix this month.
John Cena appears in the action comedy film Freelance as Mason Pettitz, a former Army Special Forces agent tasked with protecting a journalist (Alison Bree) visiting a fictional South American country. While traveling together they are ambushed, and Petitz is not simply hired as a bodyguard, but as an assassin, his job is to kill the leader of the country. Co-stars Juan Pablo Lava, Christian Slater and Alice Eve.
Stolen: Robbery of the Century (August 8)
Stolen: Heist of the Century is Raw’s latest documentary, which also produced films like Tinder Swindler and Don’t F**k. The new film reveals the real story behind one of the $100 million to $500 million diamonds worth of diamonds stolen from Antwerp safes in 2003. Thieves were captured, but most of the diamonds have never been retrieved.
Song from the Hole (August 13th)
The song from the hall is not a documentary, but it tells the true story of James “JJ ’88” Jacobs, who was imprisoned at the age of 15 and became a poet and musician while serving a life sentence behind bars. Combining the imaginary reenactment with visuals and authentic narratives that accompany Jacobs’ music, the film explores the redish properties of art that could arrive at the most unlikely location.
Director Genndy Tartakovsky’s previous films include The Hotel Transylvania series, and his new project, Fix, is another animated comedy, but this is for adults rather than children. What’s pinned is the story of Bull (voiced by Adam Devine), a dog who went out on his last wonderful night with his friend before being castrated the next day. Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Beck Bennett, Fred Armisen and Bobby Moynihan also lend their voices to the film.
It’s always coming at night (August 15th)
New Crime Striller Night features Always Always. This is based on Willy Vlautin, the 2021 novel The Night Always. Vanessa Kirby stars as a woman forced to put together $25,000 overnight to save her family’s home. The cast also includes Jennifer Jason Lee, Julia Fox, Eliros and Zach Gottsaggen.
Fast and fierce movie collection (August 16th)
Family reunion time! This August, go with some movies from the Fast and Furious franchise about a group of law-away street racers led by Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto. If you haven’t seen any of this series, start with the first film in the series, Fast and the Furious. This focuses on street racing more than anything else. But if you really want a juicy and ridiculous stunt, the franchise is now known for cars jumping from one skyscraper to another (Fast & Furious 6) and cars safely towing a 10 tonne bank on the streets of Rio (Fast Five). The truth about Jussy Smollett? (August 22nd)
In 2019, at the height of his career, actor Jussie Smollett is said to have been a victim of an attack in Chicago. As time passed and his story changed, Smollett was eventually accused of conspiring to create the entire incident and set the attack. Now, six years later, Smollett himself speaks about the subject in order to try and straighten the record of what actually happened that night.
Fantasy Football Ruined Our Life (August 27)
Italian comedy fantasy football ruined our lives, and the reigning champion of a competitive group of friends went missing. (Soccer is football, as the film takes place in Europe, in case it matters.) When the judge sees his loss, she begins to wonder whether he left himself or whether he is jealous of his friends – a team that chose to succeed in his past.
Thursday Murder Club (August 28)
Thursday’s murder club is like only building murders meet the man inside. The new film directed by Chris Columbus will explore the murders of a cold case with Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imley as retirees. When a murder occurs at their support facility, Foursome realizes that the danger is a little too close to the house and lurking. In addition to the impressive quartet of film headlines, co-stars include David Tennant, Jonathan Price, Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant.
