A self-proclaimed democratic socialist and practical Muslim, Mamdani recently won a crowded Democratic primary with a mayoral run for New York City, beating famous candidates like former governor Andrew Cuomo. Since winning, Mamdani was a lightning bolt for controversy as he avoided criticism of his economic policy proposals and anti-Israel slogans.
On NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, host Kristen Welker told Mamdani that he was I’ll blame you The phrase “globalizes intifadas.” Politicians avoided direct condemnation multiple times during the interview process.
“Do you want to condemn the phrase? “Would you globalize the intifada?” asked Welker.
“That’s not the language I use,” replied Mamdani. “The language I use and the language I continue to use to lead the city are clearly what speaks to my intentions, and they are intentions based on universal human rights beliefs.”

When asked on Sunday what he thought of Mamdani’s answer, Torres argued that future mayors denounce such rhetoric should be condemned such rhetoric, not at the level of being in prison in a particular speech.
“I strongly oppose it. No one defends jail time. So every elected official has an obligation to condemn hatred, whether anti-Semitic or Islamophobic,” the lawmaker said.
