Only 250 national guards remain In Los Angeles The deployment of additional forces will be cancelled as anti-ice protests in the city have quietened after the Pentagon announced Thursday.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegses ordered 1,350 National Guard members to leave the city, with hundreds remaining to protect federal personnel and property, Pentagon spokesman Chief Sean Parnell said in a statement to the Associated Press.
Approximately 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 Marines were sent to LA in June to gain control over the riots Immigrant attack In the city. The federal move has been made despite objections from state and local leaders, including Democrat Gavin Newsom, who filed lawsuits to end the federal deployment.
Half of the National Guard retreated about two weeks ago, and the Marines were ordered to depart a few days later.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass wrote to X on Wednesday night that more troops’ departure was “another victory for Los Angeles,” adding that “all troops will continue this pressure until they leave LA.”
“These units have families and jobs,” she wrote in another X-post Thursday. “They may have responded to real dangers and helped the community prepare for the threat of fire. Instead, they were forced to protect two office buildings for several months.”

Newsom in June alleged that the Trump administration violated the law when it deployed its troops after California appealed to halt federal deployment of the National Guard. Newsom also asked the judge to stop the military from supporting the implementation of immigrant raids.
