Last month, Trump extended the third deadline for Bytedance, the Chinese company that developed Tiktok to sell the US assets of its video sharing app. According to Reuters, the ordinance will require American buyers to be found until September 17th.

The US signed a deal with China-owned Tiktok earlier this year, contracting its US business with a new company owned by US investors, but the Chinese government said it would not agree. Trump administration tariffsaccording to the report.

With approximately 170 million active monthly users in the US, Tiktok previously had to halt operations by January 19th. A second extension was issued in April, and a third was signed in June.
Protecting Americans from the foreign hostile application law passed by Congress in April 2024 with widespread bipartisan support gave Tiktok nine months to separate it from the ordinance or be removed from US-based app stores and hosting services.
When passing the law, Congress cited concerns over Chinese ownership of the app. Members said the app could be weaponized or used to accumulate vast amounts of user data.
