Turki Alalshikh’s “Belt” Confusion: Berlanga Vs. Sheeraz on July 12th – Is the title really at crisis?

Turki Alalshikh says the Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz super middleweight headliner “can change everything,” one of them will leave “by the belt” on July 12th. Fans are confused and wonder what titles Berlanga (23-1,18 KOs) and Cearaz (21-0-1, 17 KOs) are fighting in a 12-round contest at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York. Turki said this week that Sheilaz or Chris Eubank Jr. will face Canelo Alvarez next February.

Berlanga vs. Ciarasvelt’s suspicions

Officially, Berlanga-Sheeraz is the WBC 168 pound world title eliminator that decides it is mandatory for Champion Canelo Alvarez. So, unless the lesser known belt is at risk next month, this is just a title eliminator. There are already plenty of boxing fans who believe Berlanga and Hamza don’t deserve the opportunity to win a world title shot.

The 168-pound division was weakened by the departure of David Benavidez and David Morel when they moved to 175 in 2024. However, there are other fighters worthy of filming in the world without using Retreads, Berlanga, and Sheeraz.

The 27-year-old Berlanga lost to Canelo last year in a unanimous 12-round decision that was biased in September last year. He has since defeated 35-year-old Jonathan Gonzalez Ortiz in March last year. That wasn’t a victory enough for Edgar to position himself due to another crack at Canelo already.

Sheilaz removed the 12-round draw that has been widely criticized against WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adams in February last year. He was defeated and punched in that battle, with the aid of the Champion. Many were shocked when the judges scored it as a draw as it appeared to have won 11-1 in a one-sided contest.
