UMass students and council interns killed in DC triple shooting

A student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who was a student intern in Congress, was I was killed in triple shooting Monday in Washington, DC.
Eric Tarpinian Yachim, 21, a rising senior majoring in finance with minors in political science, died in hospital as one of three people shot in Northwest DC, according to Metropolitan Police.

District 3 officials responded to a gunshot on 7th Avenue and found an unconscious Tarpinian Yachim with a gunshot wound. An adult woman and a 16-year-old man were also found shot at the location, but were conscious.

Police said several suspects began firing shots in groups after leaving the vehicle at the intersection of 7th Avenue and M Street in the northwest. The suspect’s vehicle has been recovered and detectives said in a statement that they believe Tarpinianyachim is not the intended target.
“The university has learned about the death of a student in Washington, DC and communicates with the students’ families. We know him and express deep sadness to everyone who communicates with the campus to provide support soon.”

Estes and his wife Susan have issued a statement expressing the deepest sadness and prayer for the Tarpinian Jachim family.
“I remember his kindness and the way he always welcomed anyone who came into our office with a cheerful smile,” Estes said. “I am grateful to Eric for serving Kansas’ fourth district and the country. Please pray for Susan and me during this heartbreaking time and respect their privacy.”
State Commissioner Chris Ryan issued a statement on behalf of the Massachusetts Republicans, saying, “The loss of D.C. Congress student intern and Granby resident Eric Tarpinian Jacchim is a loss in Massachusetts and our country. His family currently has no son and a graduate from the University of Massachusetts.

He continued, “The Massachusetts Republicans have expanded that deep grief to his family and Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS), all of whom are lamenting the death of this bright, talented young man.”

The American Research Fund has expressed sympathy for Tarpinian Yachim, who was once part of a group of students completing a Washington fellowship.
“The American Research Fund is heartbroken by the tragic and untimely death of Eric Tarpinian Yachim. Eric was one of the students’ groups who participated in the Washington Fellowship held in January-April 2025,” the group said. “He was a hardworking intern, a dedicated student and well thought out by his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are directed at his family and friends.”
