According to a statement posted to WMUR and Facebook, state New Hampshire Fish and Games Department conservators responded to reports of “unnecessary hitchhikers” at a market basket in Manchester on Saturday.

Conservation officer Griffin McKeun told WMUR that he spoke to an employee who “appears to be quite familiar with snakes” when dealing with the incident.

The call was “first” for McKeun, he continued. “We’ve had some calls about the surrender of ball pythons and pets of things like that, but never, never (a) a venomous snake.”

McKeun also pointed out that possession of venomous snakes is illegal in New Hampshire, except for pig-nosed snakes.
