Technically, this fight is a unified match for legitimate claims against all marbles, all major alphabet titles, Ring Magazine Championships, and lineage. But in reality, this is more specialized. Canelo is already the indisputable king of 168, and he never lost the IBF belt of the ring. Canelo was stripped of their belt by the IBF, and then Skull won the vacant belt last October when he won a unanimous decision against Vladimir Shishkin.

The IBF has a habit of ruining uncontroversial governance. They did the same to Terence Crawford shortly after he became the first uncontroversial world welterweight champion in the modern four-belt era, and also put pressure on Olexandre Usaik to the point that he eliminated the first uncontroversial IBF belt in that split in the modern four-belt ERA. Breaking Scull might be able to deny Canelo twice at 168, but Canelo remains the king of the division to go to fight Skull.
