Washington Democrats introduce legislation to remove George Washington from the state flag

The bill will establish a committee to develop new designs for the official state flag that reflects Washington’s “shared history, resources and diverse cultural communities.”
The committee consists of representatives of the Washington State Arts Committee, House and Senate legislators, Secretary of State, historians, designers, cultural leaders, tribal representatives, and civic representatives from various regions of the state. . Governor.
The committee will seek public feedback through outreach to schools, community organizations, tribes, public forums, virtual discussions and online surveys before approving the new design by July 1, 2028.

Voters must approve the design of the new flag in the next general election before adopting it as a new state flag.
Democrats’ representatives Strom Peterson, Julia Reed and Greg Nance introduced the bill on February 11th.
A hearing in Olympia is scheduled for February 18th before the House Committee on State Government and Tribal Relations. Fox28 Spokane reported.
