How does the EFL playoff work?
The EFL Playoffs are annual series matches to determine the location of the final promotion within each division of the EFL.
The playoffs, first introduced in 1987, are used to separate four teams that finish just below the automatic promotional location in the EFL division through a series of playoff matches.
In League One, teams meet the team in sixth place, while teams in fourth place will be fifth in the two-legged semi-finals.
The first leg will be held at the home of the team that has finished the lowest, while the second will be hosted by the team that has achieved a higher position.
The winners decide the tally and proceed to a one-off game to determine who was promoted at Wembley Stadium. Distant targets are not used.
Are penalties and extra time used in the playoff finals?
If extra time and optionally, a penalty will be used if the tally scoreline reaches level after the end of normal time in the second leg of the semifinals.
