Why Delap chooses Blues over “exciting” Chelsea Project rivals

Liam Dellup sealed his move to Chelsea following Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League earlier this month, revealing why he chose the Blues now.

The 22-year-old scored his eyes with 12 goals in 37 top flight appearances last year, sparking a transfer race between several Premier League clubs thanks to a £30 million release clause.

Manchester United, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Everton were among those fighting for his signature, where Dellup’s former club Manchester City holds a buyback clause.

However, it was Chelsea who ultimately secured the striker, and by speaking before the Club World Cup clash and ES Tunis, Dellup explained what he persuaded him to make the switch.

“We never know if that’s the right decision or not, but you go with your gut and hope it works,” he said.

“You have to take your time. It took me a few days to talk to people and decide on my future.”

The main factor in Delap’s decision was the opportunity to reunite with a familiar face. Among them is Cole Palmer, who previously played with Dellup in Manchester City.

“I asked him what I needed to ask him, he told me what I needed to know. But I don’t like too much information. In the end it was my decision, so I just want to make my head clear,” Delap added.

Another familiar face is Enzo Maresca, who worked at Delap during his time in Manchester City. The striker flourished under Maresca’s guidance in the under-21 setup, scoring 20 goals and earning a PL2 player as City won the 2020-21 title.

“I have a good relationship with my manager,” Dellup said.

“I know how he plays. I played on this system before. It’s very similar now, but there’s very little tweaking. I know a lot of players and club projects here, how they’ll see the future. That’s what made me excited.”

Manchester United was previously considered a front runner, but they opposed it because they were unable to qualify for Europe. Chelsea eligibility for the Champions League provided additional appeals.

“I was also looking at the future seasons, so it was all, not about finishing it all,” admitted Delap.
