Corporate bankruptcy reached its highest monthly total since the summer of 2024
According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, US corporate bankruptcy filings rose to the highest total seen in months in January.
Last month there were 70 bankruptcy filings by certain public and private companies, a total that coincided with the June 2024 levels. These months have had the highest total bankruptcy total since the 2020 pandemic.
Most of the bankruptcy is done at the discretion of the industry and consumers, based on 11 sectors tracked by S&P Global Market Intelligence. This is a continuing trend since last December. In 2024, two sectors accounted for 28% of filing.
Bankruptcy has risen significantly from the decline levels in 2021 and 2022.
