Experts call to cut US-China ties after smuggling toxic fungi arrest

Jian and Liu were arrested earlier this week and charged with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the US, false statements and Visa fraud.
“We are Americans, so I think we have the right to ignore the propaganda of hostile administrations,” Chan said. “But for the Communist Party (the war of the people) has a great resonance. What they do with their harsh anti-Americanism creates justifications that will strike our country.”

Spying attempts by former technology students
In 2022, Ji Chaoqun, a Chinese national who was a student at Illinois Institute of Technology, was found guilty after attempting to commit a trade secret spy and theft.
Chaoqun has gathered information from American defense contractors and engineers as part of a plot by China’s high-level intelligence reporting agency to gather information on US technological advances.
He was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Camping Greying Incident
In 2024, the FBI filed accusations against five Chinese nationals, all students at the University of Michigan, as it allegedly filmed a joint training exercise for America’s Taiwan at Camp Grayling, a Michigan National Guard training facility.
Their research was part of a joint programme with Shanghai-based Jiao Tong University.
University of Minnesota Drone Spy
Late last year, a University of Minnesota student and a Chinese citizen named a Chinese citizen was found guilty in federal court for using a drone to illegally photograph photos of a naval base in Norfolk, Virginia.
He was sentenced in prison for six months and was deported in May this year.

Chang also said in 2020 that Americans in all 50 states received unsolicited seeds from China, and that the US is “an attempt to plant invasive species.” He said that Chinese online retailer Temu did the same this year.
