Israeli forces withdraw from the corridor that splits Gaza into two
Hamas seized 251 hostages and killed around 1,200 people when attacking Israel on October 7, 2023, causing the Gaza War.
At least 47,500 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli attack, according to the Hamasran Health Ministry in Gaza. About two-thirds of Gaza buildings were damaged or destroyed by Israeli attacks, the UN says.
Around 700,000 people in North Gaza fled to the southern region when Israeli forces issued mass evacuation orders before they launched a ground invasion of Palestinian territory.
Many of the evacuated were forced to move multiple times after Israeli forces were forced into southern Gaza.
They were also prevented from returning home through the Netzarim corridors that stretch from the Gaza-Israel border to the Mediterranean.
Israeli forces partially retreated from the west of the corridor last month, and the first Palestinian pedestrians – were allowed to walk along Rashid Street along the coast as they crossed north of Gaza.
Those in the vehicle must use Sarah Al Din Street and be screened for weapons across the hallway.
Sunday’s withdrawal from the eastern corridor will result in Israeli rule over the Gaza border, but there is no way to cut it in half.
The Haaretz newspaper says Hamas-Run Gaza’s Home Office is urging people to “comply and adhere to existing athletic guidelines for safety.”
