Little Otter, an AI-powered family mental health startup, raises $9.5 million
Brothers can make a great startup co-founder Striped Collison Brothers. But what about the mother-daughter duo?
She works for Rebecca Egger, who co-founded the virtual mental health startup Little Otter in 2020, and her mother, Dr. Helen Egger.
In fact, her mother, Helen Egger, is a child psychiatrist and serves as the chief medical and scientific officer of otters. What Rebecca, part of the inspiration for startups, shares is that people constantly ask their mothers the same questions about their children. Should I worry? “When people found out what she had done, wherever I went with her, “Do I need to worry about my child’s behavior? Is this normal? Isn’t this the case?” And the next question is, “Where do I ask for help?” ”
Egger and her mother believe that using a combination of little otters and a team of AI and therapists, psychiatrists and other professionals, they can help parents answer that question.
The San Francisco-based company focuses on family care and provides mental health support services to young children, teenagers, parents and everyone in between. To get started, future patients will schedule kick-off sessions and undergo mental health tests. This rates all families. From there, the family will match the provider and begin the session. Patients receive feedback after each session and regain check-up surveys every three months, giving real insight into their progress.
now, luck Little Otter, which can be reported exclusively, has raised $9.5 million in funding from investors including Pivotal Ventures, Torch Capital, Springbank, CRV, Next Legacy, G9, Gratitude Railroad and Fiore Ventures. This follows the company’s $4.2 million seed round in 2021 and the $22 million Series A in 2022.
With new funding, Egger hopes to build an AI triage platform. “The original papers have always been identified early, but overall costs for families will be lower and there will be less negative impacts in the future,” Egger said. According to Egger, mental health disorders can be discovered in a 1-year-old child.
A family of 23,000 people have undergone a Little Otter medical examination and have previously signed up for care services. And this week, the company surpassed a total of 100,000 care visits. Of these, 56,000 people were completed in 2024. By increasing engineering support towards developing the company’s platform, Little Otter can expand its care. The company currently operates within the US, with both commercial and individual clients in 14 states available, and Washington, DC plans to expand further into the Medicaid partnership this year.
Data from the initial patient screening is used to determine the type of care the family needs and the best type of care to collaborate with. All sessions will be recorded with consent from family members and providers. “(W) I’m always thinking about how to make knowledge viable in both of these different user groups,” Egger says.
Egger sees Little Otter’s unique data and her and her mother’s AI expertise as a major advantage. “(w) hats will be the biggest barrier for many of these companies. She considers Deepseek’s emergence in the AI space to be truly positive. “If we can make this cheaper, it’s good,” Egger said. “The reality is that we don’t have that much data, our questions and models are significantly smaller, and costs can be ignored for now. But I think that cost reductions will open up more opportunities.”
